Magic: The Gathering The Hobbit Collector Booster Box

Mark your calendars, adventurers! The Magic: The Gathering | The Hobbit (HOB) expansion officially launches at retail on August 14, 2026.

Each box contains 12 Collector Boosters and one Traditional Foil Box Topper. Each 15-card pack features:

• 5 cards of rarity Rare or higher.

• 11–13 Traditional Foil cards.

• 0–2 Surge Foil cards, featuring a high-gloss finish exclusive to this product.

• Booster Fun slots dedicated to specialized art treatments like Book Covers and Dragon Hoard frames.

The true king under the mountain in this set is Smaug the Magnificent. While standard versions appear across the set, the Gleaming Gold foil treatment is the ultimate chase, appearing in less than 1% of Collector Boosters.

Wizards of the Coast is only printing approximately 500 copies of this non-serialized gold variant globally. Regardless of the pack’s language, the Gleaming Gold Smaug is always printed in English.

Key legendary glimmers to hunt for include:

• Bilbo, Thief in the Night (Mythic Rare) and Bilbo, Luckwearer (Uncommon).

• Thorin, Mountain-king (Mythic Rare).

• The Arkenstone // Seek the Heart (Mythic Rare Artifact/Aventura).

Collector Boosters are the only place to find certain high-fantasy artistic variants :

• Dwarven Language Cards: Five selected cards, including Arcane Signet, featuring text entirely transliterated into the Dwarvish language.

• Dragon Hoard Frames: 25 cards with a frame inspired by Smaug’s scales. Look closely at the Red variants—they feature a "missing scale" detail referencing the dragon’s fatal weakness.

• Book Cover Cards: 10 cards featuring retro-style artwork and frames that pay homage to classic 1937 fantasy novel covers.

The Aventura mechanic returns on cards like The Arkenstone, allowing you to cast a sorcery "quest" (Seek the Heart) before casting the artifact itself later from exile.

The set also utilizes the Prepare mechanic from Secrets of Strixhaven. Creatures with a "prepare spell" inset in their text box can create a copy of a powerful instant or sorcery in exile once they become "prepared" (a special game designation). This copy can be cast as long as the creature remains on the battlefield and prepared.

Each box includes a single-card Box Topper pack containing a Borderless Traditional Foil reprint of a card from the original The Lord of the Rings: Tales of Middle-earth set.

These features brand-new artwork by classic Magic artists like Dan Frazier. Confirmed Box Toppers include the multi-format staple The One Ring, as well as Commander favorites Tom Bombadil and Sauron, the Dark Lord.
